"Labyrinth" is a group installation featuring three Romanian (Maria Sofrac, Eva-Maria Luca, Adina Oros) and one Hungarian (Matulányi-Szabó Zita) artists. We met during am artistic residency that took place at the beginning of 2024, in Budapest.
The symbol of the labyrinth has a rich history in both literature and mythology, serving as a metaphor for the human quest of understanding. It embodies the journey of self-discovery, the search for meaning, and the encounter with one's innermost thoughts and emotions. In "Labyrinth," the artworks are strategically placed within the winding paths, inviting visitors to navigate through and reflect on the interconnectedness of the pieces and their personal responses.
For this project, I composed an atmospheric soundscape to accompany the visual artworks. The music drew inspiration from the sound of a cave, evoking Plato's allegory of the cave, which speaks to the themes of perception and enlightenment. Additionally, the myth of Narcissus influenced the composition. I incorporated delayed vocals echoing the words Narcissus (is said to have) uttered before his demise, creating a haunting and reflective auditory experience.
The installation encourages visitors to engage with the artworks on a personal level, navigating through the labyrinth as a metaphor for their own inner journey. The soundscape aims to deepen this experience, invoking a sense of wonder.
The collaborative nature of the project, involving artists from different cultural backgrounds added a rich layer of complexity and diversity to the project.
"Labyrinth" stands as a testament to the power of collaborative art and the profound symbolism of the labyrinth. By combining visual art with a thoughtfully crafted soundscape, the dark labyrinthine room offers a deeply immersive experience that invites visitors to explore not only the physical space but also their own inner landscapes.
