The "Urban Echoes" project is a 10-minute sound documentary that explores the transformations of the Iris neighborhood in Cluj-Napoca, focusing on the evolution of the urban landscape following the process of gentrification.
The documentary portrays the changing image of the neighborhood through a sound montage that combines atmospheric recordings with interviews from people who live or have lived in Iris. The atmosphere is captured through distinctive neighborhood sounds: from street noise and park activities to lingering industrial echoes.
Although the documentary montage may seem to suggest that these changes have a negative impact, they actually reflect a natural process of adaptation to the city’s dynamics. Gentrification merely elevates the neighborhood to an urban level comparable to other areas of the city. The aspects often considered negative—noise, overcrowding, new constructions, and rising prices—are, in reality, common features of urban life and are not an anomaly but a sign that Iris is aligning with the natural evolution of the modern city.
Iris still retains echoes of its old identity.
The Iris neighborhood reflects the transformations occurring in major Romanian cities, especially in peripheral areas that are gradually becoming part of the modern urban landscape.
This sound documentary offers a perspective on the phenomenon of gentrification in the neighborhood and its impact on local identity. The project was created as part of the "artistX in intervention" initiative, organized by Iris Comun and funded by AFCN.
